私たちが通う大宮キャンパス近くにあるジャパンビバレッジエコロジーのリサイクルセンターの見学に行きました。
このリサイクルセンターでは、時期により多少変わりますが1日約20トンのペットボトルや空き缶が搬入されリサイクルを行なっています。それらのペットボトルや空き缶は、私たちが普段使っている自動販売機近くに設置されているリサイクルボックスから来ています。
リサイクルを行う上で、まずリサイクルできるものとリサイクルできない異物を仕分ける作業を行なっていました。異物の中には、蛍光灯や電球、金属類など、どのように分別して良いかわかりずらいものが多く含まれていました。中にはバイクのマフラーと思われるのまで捨てられていました。また、ペットボトルであっても、飲み残しや中に別のものが入っているものはリサイクルできないので異物として仕分けられてしまうそうです。

異物を除去した後は、ペットボトル、空き缶、ビン、それぞれに分ける作業を行なっていました。これは、機械で仕分けを行った後、それでも仕分けられなかった残りのものについては手作業で行なっていました。
仕分けられたペットボトルは圧縮されプレス品（ペットボトルのかたまりのようなもの）として、空き缶も圧縮されベール品として出荷されます。これらは、別の工場で更なる加工を施されまた新しいペットボトルや缶として生まれ変わります。これにより、1本分のペットボトルや空き缶が、ほぼそのまま1本分の新たなペットボトル、空き缶となるそうです。ビンについては、3種類の色別に選別し出荷を行うそうです。

このように、この施設ではペットボトルや空き缶などのリサイクルを行っていますが、それらは私たちがどのように分別しどのような状態でリサイクルボックに入れるかに大きく影響されます。リサイクルボックスに指定のもの以外を入れるのは当然ダメですが、ペットボトルを入れる際もキャップとラベルを別にした上で入れるようにしようと、今回の見学を通して思いました。
